| This part of my site is dedicated to that most ultimate form of self expression, Lawn
Art. Many of you not from America's Midwest may be asking yourselves, 'What is Lawn Art?' I'm glad you asked. Seems that folk around here have grown bored of meticulously manicured and landscaped yards, and have taken to decorating them with art. Everything from the simplest silhouette of a woodchuck, to an extensively carved and painted owl made from a tree stump. By far the most interesting aspect of Lawn Art is the concrete goose. Concrete geese abound in Michigan yards, and there is no end to their owners creativity when it comes to dressing them. I have assembled a gander of geese, awarding each a score out of five.

This winter ensemble portrays the goose holding a snowball. Very original, with nice detail work on the base. I awarded one nut for the outfit, one for the base, one for originality and one for the snowball. No hat means nuts off.

I was only going to award one nut to this plain-Jane example, but on reflection I awarded an extra half nut for positioning. This goose is prominently displayed on the railing of the front patio, and cannot be missed from the street. Nuts off for the unpainted base and face.

Four and a half nuts!!! I cannot rave about this goose enough. The owner of this goose must be a seamstress of the first order. My only criticism, and a half nut off, was for hiding the feet behind a shrub, perhaps as they are unpainted like the face.

This is a very colorful chap. This is a variation on the raincoat and hat theme, and works very well with the painted base and face. 3 nuts!

No hat...nuts off. Position of prominence by the front
door...one nut. Painted base and face...one nut. This outfit looks thrown together from
old rags. Two nuts. |

Simple, yet elegant. Understated, yet bold. (Yeah, and
belongs to my mother-in-law - Ed). Five nuts. |
If you would like me to feature YOUR goose, email me a picture and a description. Be prepared to be rated! Want to buy a concrete goose? Emily wants to sell you one (seriously!). |
This is in fine print because usually it says something about how
all the images and text are copyright, but in our case they're not so feel free to take
what you like. This page was created by thegates.com. |
