Prime Minister Refers to Squirrels in Address to Nation Tuesday 27 April, 1999 The SFA scored a major victory today when the Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon. John Howard, referred to Squirrels in his annual address to the nation. In a statement about retirement savings, Mr. Howard said, "Australians need to save for retirement and not rely on the Government to provide a pension, Australians need to Squirrel away funds for a rainy day." The Prime Minister went on to berate Australians on their lack of foresight, stating that Australians who chose to buy new VCRs today will be eating dog food in retirement. Stan Squirrel, chairsquirrel of the SFA, pounced on the reference to Squirrels. "This clearly shows that introducing Squirrels to Australia is firmly on the political agenda. The SFA has been working hard to increase Australia's awareness of Squirrels, and it seems that our work is now paying dividends," he stated. When contacted by the SFA, the Prime Minister's office would only comment 'Nuts'.
